Obituary

Arthur J. Jaehnig, Jr., 78, of East Greenwich, passed away on Wednesday, (June 10, 2026) with his family by his side. He was the beloved husband of Patricia (Barr) Jaehnig with whom he shared more than 55 years of partnership and adventure.

In addition to Patricia, he is survived by two sons; Aaron Jaehnig (Anne Mary Camara) of North Kingstown, and Sean Jaehnig (Nicole Brown), of Cranston. He was the incredibly loving and proud fort building Grandfather of Henry and Olivia and treat bearing granddogfather to Lucy.

Born in Boston, son of the late Arthur Sr. and Ellen (Gurry) Jaehnig, he is also predeceased by his siblings Mary Ellen McGinty and Gerard Jaehnig. He is survived by countless cherished nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Arthur was a graduate of North Quincy High, Wentworth Institute of Technology and Roger Williams College. Between earning his Associates and Bachelor’s degrees, he served in the US Navy as a Seabee deploying to Vietnam and Diego Garcia. He always enjoyed connecting with other Vets and Servicemembers.

His post military career began as a land surveyor. After completing his degree in Civil Engineering, he spent 48 years working in many capacities at Electric Boat, first in Groton, later Quonset and a joyful and adventurous stint as a consultant to BAE Industries in the UK. That time as a consultant residing in the Lakes District of Northern England afforded many opportunities to both explore Great Britain and Europe as well as forge some strong and unforgettable friendships on the other side of the pond.

In addition to Dad, Grandpa, Art, Artie, Young Arthur, Webfoot, Uncle Artie, Candyman and Sir, he was also known lovingly by many as Coach. He coached both his sons’ teams for many years with East Greenwich Little League, East Greenwich Soccer Association and Our Lady of Mercy School Basketball teaching many kids not only how to be a good teammate but how to be a good person. He not only taught but lived the golden rule. He served for many years as board member and Board President with EG Little League, extending well beyond his own sons’ involvement.

As a coach as with friends, family and colleagues, he was both a dignified mentor and generous benefactor. Beyond Art’s firm belief in reciprocal respect and composed exterior, above all else he was a creative and adventurous person who enjoyed live music, travel, playing cards, British Pub Life, watching sports, making homemade Halloween costumes, wearing silly hats, paying for dinner, searching for sand dollars and anything that involved sharing joyous moments with the people he loved.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Tuesday, June 16, 2026 at 11:00 am at Our lady of Mercy Church, 65 Third St., East Greenwich. Burial with military honors will be in the Rhode Island Veteran’s cemetery, Exeter.
