Grecia Dámaso, 86, of Providence, Rhode Island, passed away peacefully on March 11, 2026, surrounded by her family after a courageous battle with Alzheimer's disease.
Born on January 2, 1940, in El Seibo, Dominican Republic, Grecia was the daughter of the late Modesto Dámaso and María Vitalina de la Cruz. She was one of eight children.
From a young age, Grecia dedicated herself to hairdressing and, as a young woman, became a prominent figure in the Dominican Republic's hairstyling culture, owning several important salons of the time. Grecia emigrated to the United States in the 1970s, where she later became a citizen. Throughout her career, she worked as an operator for various companies, including American Plating and Swarovski. Grecia continued to style hair even after retirement.
Grecia would describe herself as a force of nature. She was a woman defined by unwavering tenacity and a heart that belonged entirely to her friends and family. As a single mother of three, she was a warrior for her children. No obstacle was too great, no sacrifice too great when it came to their well-being. She loved spending time with her friends, she loved to travel, and above all, she loved spending time with her children and grandchildren.
Grecia is survived by her three sons, Mark, Igor, and Joel, as well as nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brothers Amado de la Cruz and Héctor de la Cruz, and her sister Teresa de la Cruz. She now joins her beloved mother, María (Nini) Vitalina de la Cruz, her sister Mercedes (Chea) Dámaso, and her brothers Livio Antonio (Toño) de la Cruz, Alfredo de la Cruz, and Modesto (Meco) de la Cruz in heaven.
