IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Susan
Bateman Pauley
January 20, 1940 – January 10, 2026
Susan Bateman Pauley, 82, passed away peacefully on January 10, 2026 following a brief decline in health. She was the daughter of Jack and Joan (nee Wade) Bateman, and was born in Chelmsford, Essex in her native country of England on January 20, 1940. Susan lived an extraordinary life in many ways, having travelled extensively in her younger years, working as a Ballet Dancer. Following her formative years in England, Susan lived in South Africa for some time, and ultimately made the United States her home for most of her life. Susan built a home with her beloved husband, Hale Pauley, in North Kingstown for nearly 40 years, ultimately marrying in the Summer, 2024. Over the years, Susan and Hale bought/sold antiques through travel back and forth to Europe. In their later years, the Pauleys enjoyed Flea Markets, Yard Sales, Gardening, Road Trips, rehabilitating houses/properties in both Rhode Island and Maine, and spending time at home overlooking the Narragansett Bay. For many years, Susan also enjoyed monthly luncheons and get-togethers with “The British Beauties”—a group of fellow transplants from England who all lived locally but shared their common British ancestry while making Rhode Island their home over the past several decades.
Susan was pre-deceased by both of her parents. Her husband, Hale Pauley, also preceded her in death, having just passed away in June, 2025. Many beloved pets also preceded the Pauleys in death, including “Sarah”, “Blackie” and most recently, their beloved Golden Retriever, “Lucy”. Susan is survived by her sister, Dianne Carter, along with her nephew, Grant Carter, both of Cheshire, England, as well as her step-daughter, Susan McGregor of the Bahamas. Susan also leaves behind several of “the Girls” (as she affectionately referred to the British Beauties friendship group), as well as close family friend, Stephen Swartzlander of Norwich, CT. Susan was fortunate to have had an especially close friendship of nearly 40 years with British Beauty friend, Suzanne O’Brien, who had been her neighbor and fellow Mount View resident when they met decades ago. Susan and Suzanne enjoyed bike rides, dancing to jazz, walking the dogs, and enjoying “a cuppa” at each other's homes. Suzanne will always cherish her last visit with Susan just the day before her dear friend’s passing, and the memory of Susan’s beautiful smiling face as she blew Suzanne a kiss goodbye-- with what turned out to be her final farewell.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at the convenience of local friends and family. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Hill Skeffington Funeral Home of East Greenwich, RI. www.hillskeffington.com
