Hoyer, Carl I., age 86, formerly of Chestnut Hill and Ashland, Massachusetts, died peacefully on July 8th surrounded by his loving family. He was a Vice President of Amica Mutual Insurance, Lincoln, Rhode Island, by whom he had been employed for 42 years, retiring October 1, 1995. He had resided in East Greenwich, Rhode Island since 1967.
Following graduation from Brookline (MA) High School, he graduated from Boston University in 1951 as well as Suffolk Law School in 1960. He had been a member of Boston University Lodge, Ancient Free and Accepted Masons since 1951, as well as Mt. Vernon Lodge in Rhode Island.
He held the rank of Captain, United States Naval Reserve and had been commanding officer of seven Reserve Naval Security Groups during the 43 years of his Reserve affiliation. Part of his active duty was in Korea during the Korean War. He also witnessed the detonation of the first hydrogen bomb in Eniwetok on November 1, 1952. A Life Member of the Naval Reserve Association, he also served as a Naval Academy Information Officer from 1974 to 1990.
A former communicant of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, he served as an Intercessor, Lay Reader, Chalicer, Junior and Senior Warden. He had been active for over 30 years in the Episcopal Charities Fund.
Serving 12 years on the East Greenwich School Committee, he was Vice Chairman during his second and third terms. He was elected to the East Greenwich Town Council in November 1994 and served as its Vice President for four years, as well as its President from 1998 to 2000. Additionally, he had been a member of the Turks Head Club, East Greenwich Republican Town Committee, East Greenwich Veteran Firemen’s Association and had been a Life Member of the American Legion and the East Greenwich Animal Protection League. He had been Treasurer of the East Greenwich Girls Basketball League from 1974 to 1978. A member of the Varnum Continentals since 1970, he served as its treasurer since 1981. He was also a board member of the East Greenwich Free Library from 1994 to 1999 as well as having taught “55 Alive.”
He was predeceased by his wife Nancy (Johnson), R.N. and leaves three daughters, Mrs. Lisa Johnson, R.N. of East Greenwich, Mrs. Sherry Anderson (Scott) of Port Murray, NJ, Mrs. Wendy Scharen, R.N. (Marc) of Bolivia, NC and a son Carl F. Hoyer of East Greenwich, 11 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.
A Requiem Eucharist will be celebrated Saturday, July 16th at 11:00am at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, Peirce St., East Greenwich. Calling hours: Friday, July 15th from 4:00pm to 8:00pm at the Hill Funeral Home, 822 Main St., East Greenwich. A private burial will be held where he will be interred alongside his wife of 50 years. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Carl’s memory to St. Luke’s Church, East Greenwich.
