Carlo Roberti

Carlo Roberti, 83, passed away peacefully on April 25, 2018.  Born in Providence, he was the son of the late Carlo and Lucy (Diozzi) Roberti.  He was happily married to the love of his life, Arlene (Basso) Roberti for 58 years.

After graduating from Mt. Pleasant High School in 1953, he earned a Bachelor of Science from the University of Rhode Island in 1958, followed by a Master of Science in plant pathology.  While at URI, he joined the ROTC Program and later attained the rank of Captain in the United States Army where he served in the Korean War.  Following his military tour, he became a teacher at East Greenwich High School where he taught mathematics for more than 30 years.  At EGHS, he coached track & field and cross country and led his teams to win numerous State championships over the years.  In 2007, he was inducted into the Southern League Track and Field Hall of Fame.

Carlo served as the State Plant Pathologist and conducted regular inspections of registered nurseries to identify diseases and prescribed treatments.  Throughout his life he was an avid gardener and was best known for his many varieties of tomatoes.  As the years progressed, he began tending to dahlias and became a member of the Rhode Island Dahlia Society.  His love for nature and plants was evidenced by his very large library and his insatiable appetite for reading about them.  He traveled extensively in the United States and Europe and cruised annually.  One of his favorite places to visit was the northeast coast of Maine where he cherished spending time with his family and grandchildren.  Besides his wife, he is survived by three sons: Dino; Peter and his wife, Cecile; and Paul and his wife, Meg, all of North Kingstown; and six grandchildren, Gina, Jacqueline, Alexandra, Ethan, Christian and William.  He was the brother of the late Janet Anastasi.
