It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother. Carmen L. Otero was born on December 7, 1926, in Manatí, Puerto Rico, to Epifanio Otero and Carmen Otero Cintrón.
Our beloved Carmen is now reunited with her parents and her seven siblings —Inés, Maximina, Ángel Luis, Buenaventura “Tura,” Lupicinio “Lupe,” Ana Delia, and Epifanio Jr. “Fani.” She also joins in eternal rest her three beloved children—Ángel Manuel Hernández, Sonia Ortiz, and Jorge Luis Ortiz—and her grandson, Víctor Luis Marrero.
Carmen’s life was a testament to resilience, devotion, and a love that knew no bounds.
She is survived by her three adoptive children, two who were also her beloved grandchildren—Ricardo Ángel Hernández and Sonia Hernández Smith, and her great granddaughter Angélica Hernández—each of whom cherished her beyond measure.
She had a lineage of 9 grandchildren: Ricky, Sony, Victor, Sandra, Tata, Junito, Erick, Jocelyn, and Luis Alberto; 16 great grandchildren: Eric, Angelica, Ángel, Anthony, Devon, Semaiah, Erik, Michael, Annaleah, Nathan, Matthew, Jovanni, Allison, Jacob, Mason H., and Mason P.; and 5 great-great grandchildren: Mia, Mariah, Julian, Isabella, Matthew, Wesley, Jett and Jhene
Carmen was the heart and soul of our family—a woman whose boundless love and nurturing spirit brought everyone together. She was known for her beautiful smile, her warmth, her strength, and her many Spanish phrases and riddles that she shared so freely. She loved music and was always the first to dance at any gathering, bringing a spark of joy and energy to every room she entered. Many will remember her signature “two-step,” and when it came to a game of dominoes, she carried that same spirit—competitive, focused, and never one to let a win slip away easily.
She was our guiding light, a beacon of hope, our anchor, and our safe place. Her love was generous, and her wisdom was deep. Her love was the glue and foundation to our family. To be loved by Carmen was to know warmth, comfort, and home.
