Born on a ranch in Wendell, Idaho, he was raised in Peoria, Illinois where he attended Bradley University. He was commissioned Ensign in 1940 in the US Navy’s first V-7 class.

During World War II he served in both the Atlantic and Pacific Theaters aboard the Idaho, Savo Island and Antietam. The USS Savo Island was heavily involved in the battle of Leyte Gulf, the largest naval battle in history, and played an active role in the Pacific campaign.

After the war, he attended the US Naval Academy’s Post Graduate School in Annapolis where he met his wife, Audrey. He was Executive Officer of the cruiser Miami and commanded the USS Glennon. He served as a career officer for 23 years including as Executive Officer at the US Navy base in Bremerhaven, Germany. He was ‘Q Cleared’ for the development of the Atomic Bomb and a member of the Navy Planning Research Team for their Cosmic Ray Study. In 1949, he was assigned as liaison to Warner Bros. for the filming of the movie “Task Force” starring Gary Cooper and Walter Brennan, which featured the USS Antietam under his command.

In retirement, he worked at Sealol Corporation before joining the staff of the Episcopal Diocese of RI as the Administrative Assistant to three different bishops. He

helped found the Episcopal Charities Fund of RI. He served his community on the Boards of the Amos House, Kent County YMCA, St. Elizabeth’s home, Glenwood cemetery, and as President of the East Greenwich High School PTA. He served on the vestry of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church and was an active member of the parish serving in a variety of roles since 1957. He continued to attend church on a weekly basis through his 106th birthday. He lived in the same house that he and his wife built in 1961 in East Greenwich. His neighbors liked to refer to him as “the Mayor of Twin Pond Road”.

He is survived by two sons, George R. And his wife, Dawn, of Deerfield, IL, and William, Jr. of East Greenwich, RI, and five grandsons and three great-grandchildren: Ian McClintick, his wife, Katie and their two sons, Lucas and Isaac; Chris McClintick; Brendan McClintick and his wife, Ali Omsberg; Colin McClintick; Kyle McClintick and his wife, Gigi and their son, Theo.

He was predeceased by his wife, Audrey, and his daughter, Cheryl.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Wednesday July 1, 2026, at 11:00 am at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 99 Peirce St., East Greenwich, RI.
