Charles N. Mock, 89, East Greenwich, RI, died on December 18, 2016 at Kent Hospital. He was the husband of Carolyn Cooke Mock and they had been married 62 years. Mock was the son of the late C. S. Mock, Jr. and Lillie M. Newman Mock, both of Brunswick, Georgia. Mock attended Glynn Academy, Brunswick, GA, and the University of Georgia, where he graduated in 1950 with a Juris Doc Law degree. He was a member of the Georgia Bar Association as well as federal bars, including the U.S. Supreme Court.
After high school, Mock served in the USAAF during World War II, including a year in the Japanese occupation, 1945-46. Mock was a special agent of the FBI from 1951 to 1959. He was involved in Soviet counter espionage activities in New York City during the cold war and was involved in some high profile FBI investigations. After resigning from the FBI, Mock was personnel manager at Revlon’s cosmetic factory in New Jersey, then corporate personnel director for the Foster Grant Company, Leominster, Mass. He then joined the Providence Journal Co. in 1969 as corporate Vice President – Personnel. Mock was responsible for all human resources, labor relations, co-acquisitions, and community relations activities for the Providence Journal and all of its subsidiaries, during its rapid growth into publishing, commercial printing, broadcasting, TV stations, cable TV, and cellular telephone areas throughout the US during the period 1969-1990. He retired in 1990 as Executive Vice President.
Mock was a communicant at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, East Greenwich, RI, where he had been a former vestry member. Mock and his wife had also been members of Christ Episcopal Church, Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, and All Saints Episcopal Church Wolfeboro, NH. Mock was a former member of the Hope Club, Dunes Club, and Potowomut Golf Club. He was also a member of the Ponte Vedra Club, Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida where he and his wife maintained a home for many years. For many years they also had a home on Lake Winnipesauke, New Hampshire. For several years, Mock was a board member of the Rhode Island Lung Association. Mock and his wife were antique and art collectors for many years. They enjoyed a number of trips world-wide.
Mock is survived by his wife, his son Charles, Jr, and his wife Donna, of Seattle, WA; his daughter Cynthia and her husband Dennis of East Greenwich; 5 grandchildren: Erica and her husband Andrew of Sharon, MA; Adam and his wife Ashley, of Coventry; Andrew and his wife Sara of Norwood, MA; and Erin and Nathan, both of Seattle; great grandson: John of Sharon; brother Edward and sister Linda, both of Brunswick, GA.
A celebration of his life will be held Thursday December 22nd at 11:00 am at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, Peirce St., East Greenwich. Burial will be private. Calling hours are omitted. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Lung Association (www.lung.org) or St. Luke’s Church, East Greenwich, RI.
