Dennis M. Mclaughlin

Dennis McLaughlin passed away peacefully under hospice care on Wednesday July 24. He was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, and coach. Dennis was born and raised in Providence, the middle son of Edward and Kathleen (Dailey) McLaughlin, and brother to Edward, William, Thomas, and Kevin.

He played basketball for Saint Michael’s parish and graduated from Hope High School, class of 1963. Dennis proudly served in the United States Navy on a submarine during the Cold War era. He went on to begin his career as a professional firefighter, serving the City of Providence until his retirement at the rank of Captain of the Fire Prevention Bureau. Dennis also earned two bachelor’s degrees from Providence College while serving with the fire department. He was an avid sports fan who coached his sons in little league baseball, soccer, and basketball in the East Greenwich community where he resided for over 45 years and attended Our Lady of Mercy parish.

Dennis is survived by his loving wife and best nurse, Mary Martha (Jabour) McLaughlin, to whom he was married for nearly 50 years. He is also survived by her mother, Mrs. Adele Jabour, who treated him like her own son. Dennis was the proud, devoted father of Andrew M. McLaughlin and his wife Lisa, and Jonathan M. McLaughlin and his wife Holly. He was affectionately known as “Pa” to his 5 grandchildren whom he adored: Ian, Caroline, Adele, Hannah, and Henry. Pa was always thoughtful, patient, and generous with his time. He was a selfless man with a warm heart and a cool head. He was a cancer survivor, and overcame many health battles over the years with the love of his family and the tireless support of his wife Martha. Dennis is finally resting at peace and will truly be missed by those fortunate enough to have known him.
