Donald Fownes Gray, a cherished resident of East Greenwich, RI, passed away peacefully on January 22, 2025, at the age of 85. Born on October 29, 1939, to Donald and Ella(Howland) Gray.  Donald grew up in Cranston, RI, where he developed a lifelong passion for the arts.  Donald was known for his charisma, kindness, and generosity.

A proud graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) with a master's degree, Donald dedicated his professional life to the field of graphic arts. He worked as a graphic artist at the Providence Journal while simultaneously serving as the Director of the Art Department at the Community College of Rhode Island (CCRI). His contributions to both institutions were marked by his creativity, dedication, and leadership.

In the 1970s, Donald rehabbed historic houses in Foster and then later one in East Greenwich that would become his residences.  His attention to detail and eye for design was a testament to his appreciation for history and craftsmanship.

In the 1990s, he and his wife, Nancy, purchased a cottage in Inishmore, a small island off the west coast of Ireland. They cherished their time there, making many lifelong friends and creating lasting memories.  Donald had a deep love for collecting antique toys, a hobby that brought him joy and connected him with many fellow enthusiasts.

He was predeceased by his wife, Nancy Lee Gray, and his stepson, Michael Bryan. Donald is survived by his three sons, Jonathan Gray, Donald (Karen) Gray, and Todd (Erin) Gray. He also leaves behind his beloved grandchildren: Joshua, Ashley, Courtney, Emily, Olivia, Autumn, and Jayden. Additionally, he is survived by his sisters, Donna Davis and Marcia Holgate, and his brother, Sanford Gray.

Donald will be remembered for his warm spirit, his dedication to the arts, and his unwavering love for his family and friends. His legacy will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.

Funeral service Saturday February 1st at 11:00 am at the Hill – Skeffington Funeral Home, 822 Main St., East Greenwich. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery, East Greenwich. Visitation prior to the service will be held from 10:00 am – 11:00 am.
