Doris Fowler Atherton

passed peacefully from this life into the loving arms of her Savior Jesus Christ on Mother's Day, Sunday, May 10, 2020. She was at home with her husband, her passing was the result of natural causes; Doris was 94 years old, 30 days short of her 95 birthday. Born on June 9, 1925 in Hartford, Connecticut, to her parents, Mabel Nelson Fowler and Percy Swan Fowler they named their second child Doris Elizabeth Fowler, her brother was Robert Fowler. Upon graduation from North Providence High School Doris continued her education at the Katharine Gibbs School, where she gained business and secretarial skills. Doris spent the majority of her career employed by the Gorham Manufacturing Company in Providence, R.I., one of the largest American manufacturers of sterling and silver-plate. Doris traveled coast-to-coast representing Gorham and its products, at a time when such opportunities were rare for women. While working at Gorham, she met Arnot Atherton, who became her husband of 65 years. Doris and her husband lived in Cumberland, Rhode Island, for the past 55 years. She was a revered and cherished member of the Sheldonville Baptist Church, Grace Baptist, and later the Pascoag Community Baptist Church where she was also active in supporting the Christian School and its members. Doris is survived by her husband, sons Eric Atherton and Dwight Atherton, two grandsons, Ian Atherton and Dawson Atherton and other cherished family members and friends.
