Dorothy B. Trehy, 89, wife of Lt. Colonel Joseph D., Trehy, Jr., a longtime resident of East Greenwich, passed away on May 20, 2017. Born in West Warwick, the only child of the late Emma and Wilfred Bestwick. Besides her husband, she leaves two daughters, Jane Trehy and Elizabeth Smith and her husband Daniel and two grandchildren, Brittany and Christopher Smith.
She was a graduate of Forsyth School of Dental Hygiene, Boston and attended Southern Methodist University, Dallas TX. She held a dental hygiene license in RI and CT. As an Army wife she lived in Arkansas, Oklahoma, North Carolina, Washington State, Maryland and Germany. While her husband was overseas in Vietnam, Korea and Thailand she returned to RI and to dental hygiene.
She was a member of the East Greenwich Methodist Church and was formerly active in the women’s group as co-chairman of the May Breakfast. She was also president of the former East Greenwich Civic Club and served as co-chairman of the original Luminary Christmas Tour.
As an animal lover she was a founding member of the EGAPL, where she served as president several times and on the board. She was an avid gardener and worldwide traveler that started in her childhood and continued as a military wife and after retirement. She enjoyed spending summers at Roy Carpenter’s Beach.
Her funeral service will be held Wednesday, May 24th at 10:00am at the East Greenwich United Methodist Church, 1558 South County Trail, East Greenwich. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Coventry. Calling hours are omitted. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to an animal charity of your choice
