Dr. Conrad William Wesselhoeft, a distinguished pediatric surgeon and respected member of the Providence medical community, passed away peacefully of natural causes on September 28, 2025, at the age of 92.
Born in Amesbury, Massachusetts, on March 6, 1933, to Conrad William and Kathryn Wesselhoeft, Dr. Wesselhoeft embodied a lifelong dedication to learning, service, and care. He graduated summa cum laude from Dartmouth College in 1955 and earned his medical degree from Tufts University School of Medicine.
After completing his medical residencies, he served as a surgeon in the U.S. Army, stationed at Fort Gordon in Augusta, Georgia. Upon returning to civilian life, he began his decades-long career in pediatric surgery, becoming a foundational figure at Hasbro Children’s Hospital in Providence, Rhode Island. Known for his surgical excellence, compassion, and quiet leadership, Dr. Wesselhoeft helped shape the care of countless young patients and mentored generations of physicians.
Outside the operating room, he was a man of broad interests. He was a devoted wine collector, an enthusiastic tennis player, an avid gardener, and a distinguished member of the Flying Physicians Association, a nationwide community of physician-pilots united by a shared passion for medicine and aviation.
Dr. Wesselhoeft was predeceased by his beloved wife, Patricia Frances Wesselhoeft. He is survived by his brother, Karl Wesselhoeft; his four children: LeeAnn Ablin (Jack), Karen Caesar, Suzanne Wesselhoeft (William Andreoni), and Conrad William Wesselhoeft, III; his six grandchildren: Elise Ablin, Emily Ablin, Courtney Caesar, Isabella Andreoni, Kyle Wesselhoeft, and Amanda Wesselhoeft; and one great-grandchild, Cecily O'Brien.
A life lived with dignity, devotion, and quiet brilliance, Dr. Wesselhoeft leaves behind a legacy of healing, love, and integrity. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, colleagues, and the many families whose lives he touched.
