Elizabeth "Betty" S. White

Elizabeth "Betty" S. White 99, of South Kingstown and formerly of East Greenwich and Warwick, passed away January 29, 2017. She was the wife of the late Howard L. White, Sr. Born in Chicago, IL, she was the daughter of the late Harry M. St. John, Sr. and Frances (Hillabrand) St. John.

Mrs. White had a Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Michigan, where she was a member of Chi Omega Sorority, a Master’s Degree in Microbiology from the University of Chicago and a Master’s in Library Science from the University of Rhode Island.

Before marriage she worked at Squibb Pharmaceuticals and later as a librarian at the Warwick Public Library. Betty was committed to and awarded for her volunteer work with the League of Women Voters. She was an advocate for water quality through the Environment Council of RI and was a supporter of the Nature Conservancy, resulting in the conservation of significant lands in RI.

She is survived by her children Joyce C. White and Christopher W. White and grandchildren Bronwyn and Willa Murre. She was preceded in death by her son Howard L. White, Jr., her brother Harry M. St. John, Jr. and grandson Simon Murre.

Her Memorial Service will be held Wednesday, February 1st at 11:00 am at the First Baptist Church of East Greenwich, Peirce St. Contributions in her memory may be made to the Audubon Society of RI, 12 Sanderson Rd., Smithfield, RI 02917.
