Enemencio “Papo” DeJesus Toribio, 75, of Providence, born in La Vega, Dominican Republic, passed away on July 31, 2024, at Bannister Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing in Providence after a prolonged illness. Papo was born on August 8, 1948, to the late, Manuela Toribio.
He is survived by his children, Jose Nathan Cohen and his wife Amy of New Jersey, Jonathan Toribio of Woonsocket, Caitlin Alexandra Deleon and her husband Michael of Cranston, Matthew Jeremiah Toribio of Cranston and his grandchildren, Nathan, Ethan, Jayden, Selena and Elijah.
Upon arriving in Providence in the early 1970’s, Papo dedicated his life to promoting civic engagement with the goal of uniting and improving the lives of the Hispanic community. He co-founded the first Dominican social club in Providence in the 1970’s and became a beloved figure in the Hispanic community. Papo’s passion was youth and adult sports. He founded the Roberto Clemente Little League in Providence furthering his belief in the power of youth baseball and softball to teach life lessons that build stronger individuals and communities. Papo was a co-founder and lifelong member of Club Juan Pablo Duarte where he also served as a President. His contributions to the Hispanic community and the positive impact he made shall never be forgotten.
Papo was employed by the City of Providence, Department of Public Works until his retirement.
Visitation will be held on Monday, August 5 at Skeffington Funeral Home and Cremations, 925 Chalkstone Avenue, Providence from 9:00 am -11:00 am with burial to follow immediately at Pocasset Cemetery, 417 Dyer Avenue, Cranston, RI.
