George C. Arnold, Iii

Arnold, George C., III, 93, passed away on October 21, 2016. He was the beloved husband of the late Joan A. Arnold for 63 years. Born in Providence he was a son of the late Lincoln R. and Madeleine W. Arnold.

Mr. Arnold worked for Universal Winding Co. and then for BA Ballou Co. He was a graduate of Hope High School, class of 1940 and then entered Brown University. In 1941 he enlisted in the Navy Aviation V-5 program and in 1942 he accepted a commission in the USMC as a 2nd Lieutenant. He then completed ground school flight training in 1943 and in 1944 he was made an instructor for PBJ’S, JBB’S and SNB’s at Cherry Point, NC.

He enjoyed big band music. Earlier in his life he sang in the choir at Stephen’s Church on George St., in Providence. He was an avid boater and pilot and was a descendant of the Whaling Master. He belonged to the Mayflower Society, the Society of the Cincinnati, Quiet Birdman, the Quonset Davisville Navy Yacht Club, and the EG Veterans Fireman’s Club.

George loved crossword puzzles and his dog Mikey, a Samoyed.

He is survived by his four sons; March W. Arnold and Jody Lane, Bruce R. Arnold (Deborah), George C. “Jay” Arnold, IV and Robert J. Tingle, Jr., and Jeffrey W. Arnold (Sandy), eight grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. He was the brother of the late Barbara Groundwater and Robert Arnold.

A memorial service will be celebrated, Thursday November 3rd at 11:00 am at the Swan Point Cemetery Chapel, Blackstone Blvd., Providence. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Exeter No – Kill Pet Refuge.
