Irene T. (Serwatka) McMann, 85, passed away, surrounded by family on Christ the King Day, Sunday, November 20, 2022, after a long illness. She was the loving wife of the late Donald J. McMann. They were married for 64 years. Born and raised in Chicopee Falls, MA, she was the daughter of the late Thaddeus and Mary (Nowak) Serwatka.
After graduating from high school, Irene met and married Donald. His military career in the United States Air Force took Irene and their six children to postings in Scotland, Spain, Rome, New York, and Tacoma, Washington. While Donald was deployed to Vietnam (65-67) as well as multiple years-long deployments to Greenland and Turkey, Irene parented the children alone during these unaccompanied tours of duty. She was organized and pragmatic, which suited her well to life as a military wife. Irene had a love of travel with her family during the military days and was curious about other cultures. She had a love for reading and for history. Irene was a talented cook and seamstress. She was very kind and had a love for animals, especially her pets.
After Donald’s military retirement, Irene settled with her family in North Kingstown, RI where they continued raising and mentoring their children and welcomed many grandchildren and great grandchildren. A proud woman of Christian faith, Irene had a great capacity to roll with the vicissitudes of life, accepting whatever life threw at her with humor, grace and style. Irene was grounded by family from her early years until her passing.
She leaves six children: Donna M. Conway (Jay) of North Kingstown, RI; Joseph McMann (Nina) of Martha’s Vineyard, MA; Jacqueline Duvall of Naples, FL; Kelly LaBarbera (David) of North Kingstown, RI; Kristin L. Walbridge (Jack) of Warwick, RI; and George R. McMann (Susan) of Millville, MA. Irene is also survived by her half-brother, Richard Serwatka of Amanda, MI, and nephew Donald Pelletier (Denise) of So. Hadley, MA. She had 16 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren as well as many nieces and nephews. Irene was predeceased by her half-sisters, Nancy Pellitier (Donald), Shelley Gifford and half-brother, James Serwatka of Ann Arbor, MI.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held Monday, November 28th at 10:00 am at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, 381 School Street. North Kingstown, RI 02852. Burial will be in the Rhode Island Veterans Cemetery, Exeter. Calling hours: Sunday, November 27, 2022, from 2-4 pm at Hill Funeral Home 822 Main Street, East Greenwich, RI 02818.
