Jacqueline Labbee Turner passed away peacefully on January 28, 2024, surrounded by family in her home of more than 50 years. She was the beloved wife of Wayne M. Turner, with whom she had recently celebrated 60 years of marriage.
Born in Providence, RI on April 29, 1935, she was the only child of Joseph and Katherine (Gloucester) Labbee. She graduated from Cranston High School and later the University of Rhode Island in 1957, where she was a member of the Chi Omega sorority.
Her father’s duties as a career army officer brought the family across the country and to several states throughout Jackie’s childhood. But for Jackie, her true home was always Edgewood.
Jackie not only raised her family in Edgewood, but was a force in the community with volunteer work that spanned decades. She was a member of the Rhode Island Federation of Garden Clubs, twice president of the Edgewood Garden Club, and a former trustee of the William H. Hall Library. She was involved in both the renovations of the library in the late 1980s as well as the restoration of Stillhouse Cove in the early 2000s. She and her family were also longtime members of the Edgewood Yacht Club, where they berthed their sloop “Chaperon.” With family and friends, she spent many memorable summers sailing Narragansett Bay and beyond.
A consummate hostess, Jackie had an unrivaled attention to detail and aesthetic eye. She was known for the beauties she created with her own hands, from needlepoint to calligraphy to floral design. An avid reader, Jackie almost always could be found with a book close by.
In addition to her husband, Jackie is survived by her son Daryl Turner and his wife Maryanne of Cranston, RI and her daughter Dara Iserson of Wilton, CT. She also leaves behind four grandchildren: Samantha Turner of Cranston, RI; Dylan Turner of West Warwick, RI; Annabelle Iserson of New York, NY; and Elizabeth Iserson of Los Angeles, CA.
Services will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Edgewood Waterfront Preservation Association (stillhousecove.org).
A gathering at Swan Point Cemetery’s Memorial Grove in Providence will be scheduled for a later date.
Arrangements entrusted to the J.F. Skeffington Funeral Home and Cremations, 925 Chalkstone Avenue, Providence.
