James John Doherty, son of John and Alice (Swain) Doherty, was born on February 7, 1947, in Providences Rhode Island. He attended Providence Country Day School in East Providence and graduated in June 1964.He entered Brown University in September 1964 and received the degree of Bachelor of Arts, cum laude, in June 1968.
After two years on active duty in the UnitedStates Army, he began a career in journalism. He worked as a reporter and editor for the Charleston(S.C.) News and Courier, the Providence Journal-Bulletin, and the Dallas Times Herald.
He entered the Graduate School at Providence College in June 1985 and received the degree of Masterof Arts, with honors, in May 1987. He then entered Yale Divinity School and received the degree of Master of Arts in Religion, magna cum laude, in May 1988.
In August 1988 he entered the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences at Fordham University, where he majored in Historical Theology under the mentorship of Professor John Meyendorff.
