James E. Mcgeary, Jr.

James E. McGeary, Jr., 89, passed away at home, surrounded by his family on July 15, 2024.  He is survived by his wife of 57 years Norrene (Shugrue) McGeary. Born in Providence he was a son of the late James E., Sr., and Evelyn (Carmody) McGeary.

Jim grew up in the Edgewood section of Cranston.  After graduating from Cranston East High School, he enlisted and served four years with the U.S. Navy.  He has resided in East Greenwich with his wife for the past 45 years.

He was a member of the UFCW Local 328 Union, working as a Meat manager for the Almacs supermarket chain for 42 years. Jim continued to work on into his retirement for Dave’s Market and Tom’s Market.  He was the co-owner of Shamrock Ceramics with his wife for many years.

Jim was an avid ice hockey fan. His love of the sport started when he would attend Rhode Island Reds games back in the old Auditorium.   He was a season ticket holder of the Providence Bruin for 25 years, and also loved to watch the Boston Bruins games on TV.

Besides his wife he is survived by two children Erin L. DellaGrotta and her husband Christopher and Timothy M. McGeary; two grandchildren Amanda DellaGrotta and her husband Nicholas Campion and Lauren (DellaGrotta) Wright and her husband Alexander. He was the brother of the late Jane Watson.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday July 20th at 10:00 am at Our Lady of Mercy Church, 65 Third St., East Greenwich. Burial will be in Highland Memorial Park, Johnston. Calling hours: Friday July 19th will be held from 6-8 pm in the Hill Funeral Home, 822 Main St., East Greenwich.
