James J. Trainor, Jr.

James J. Trainor Jr., age 88, passed away Monday, September 15, 2025, at the Kent Regency Nursing Home. He was the beloved husband of Anita B. Trainor to whom he shared 66 years of marriage. Born in Fall River, MA, he was a son of the late James J Trainor Sr. and Edith (McNaboe) Trainor.

He was active and served his community in a number of ways. As teenager he was an East Greenwich volunteer fireman. He enlisted in Rhode Island Army National Guard and was Honorably Discharged in 1958.

He met Anita Bessette in Gorham, New Hampshire and had the good sense to propose and marry her in Oct of 1959. They had six children and as they grew James continued to be active in the kid’s activities and the community. He was den leader for the Cub Scout and later the Boy Scouts where he was an example and mentor to young men. For his contribution he was awarded the “Cubber of the Year” in 1972. He coached Pop Warner football for a number of years teaching the values of teamwork and sportsmanship.

He was a business owner running a gun and archery store on Main Street for number of years. He also conducted hunter safety courses.

He was associated with the Veterans Fireman Association. During his tenure he served in various roles that included President of that organization and on the membership committee.

He was also a member of the local chapter of the Knights of Columbus.

James loved the outdoors as evident by the Summer family camping trips or the hunting trips to New Hampshire with his sons. He also enjoyed Square Dancing, Golfing or simply getting together with friends to play cards.

James is survived by his wife Anita Trainor, his sons Mark and his wife Sharon Trainor, Peter and wife Justina Trainor, James Trainor III, Michael Trainor, William Trainor and his daughter Susan Caroppoli and his grandsons Joshua and Tyler Caroppoli. 

His funeral and burial will be private.
