James Joseph Young, of East Greenwich, RI, passed away at Hope Hospice in Providence on April 30, 2018. He was born on January, 13, 1930 the son of the late Mary Elizabeth (Arnold) Young Byrne and Frederick George Young. Jim is survived by his wife of sixty five years, Mary Dorothy (Rogers) Young of East Greenwich and his son, James J Young III and daughter in law, Jama B Young of Vero Beach, FL.
Jim was very creative and had an artistic eye his entire life. He attended The Rhode Island School of Design and used his talents throughout his life in many endeavors. He loved to work on his home and build boats with his son Jim who also shared a love of cars with his father. Jim enjoyed gardening; tending his vegetable and flower gardens, including his beautiful roses and Arnold family Dahlias with love and care. Jim was passionate about his dogs Buddy, Bowser, Pete, Pinky and Cricket; fond memories of them sustained him throughout his lifetime.
In the 1950’s and 60’s, James Young’s deep baritone voice, under the pseudoname Jim Lane, was the voice of RI on local radio stations WEAN and WKFD; his voice recognizable across the state.
Jim was a member of The First Baptist Church of East Greenwich and a Mason of the 32nd degree and member of Harmony Lodge No 9 in Cranston, RI. During the Korean War, he served in the RI National Guard Military Police Division.
Early in his career, Jim’s engineering expertise led to teamwork on the Atlas Guided Missile Program in Radnor, PA and then to a career in broadcasting as an engineer at WJAR Ch 10 in Providence for 30 years.
His Funeral Service will be Thursday, May 3rd at 10:30am at Hill Funeral Home, 822 Main St., East Greenwich.
A private family burial will take place at Glenwood Cemetery, East Greenwich.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Baptist Church of East Greenwich or Animal Rescue Rhode Island in Peacedale.
