After raising four children, Joan returned to the nursing profession and worked in a nursing home for several years in New Jersey before moving to Rhode Island, where she successfully ran a small picture framing business, Frame It Yourself, for 17 years.

Joan and Don were avid boaters, enjoying both sailboats and motorboats during their years living near the ocean.
