Joyce Gwendoline Carter

Joyce Gwendoline Carter, 91, passed away peacefully on January 19, 2020, with family by her side after a short but serious illness.  She was born in 1928 in Sawbridgeworth, England and came to the United States in 1953 to marry her husband George Carter.

Joyce met George in England while he was a student at the London School of Economics and she worked as a hairdresser. They were married in Louisville, Kentucky in 1953 and lived in South Bend, Indiana, and Columbus, Ohio, before settling in East Greenwich, Rhode Island.

In East Greenwich, they raised four children. Joyce worked for many years for the school department, first as a teacher’s aide and later as a secretary. During their retirement years, they split time between Warwick, Rhode Island and Lady Lake, Florida. They spent 52 years together before George passed away in 2005. Since then Joyce lived with her family in Warwick, Rhode Island.

Joyce loved to travel and particularly enjoyed visiting family in England and having family from England or Kentucky come to visit. She was an active member of Frenchtown Baptist Church and more recently Faith Baptist Church, attending whenever she could. Over the years she served in the church in various capacities and in recent years she particularly enjoyed taking part in the Seniors Serving Christ ministry.

Joyce is survived by her four children, Craig Carter and his companion Tim Godin, Kirk Carter and his wife Mary, Wendy Lobato and her husband David, and Scott Carter. She is also survived by three grandchildren, Sarah Lobato, Daniel Lobato, and Jack Carter and two great-grandchildren, Jessel and Isaac Viveiros.

Funeral Service Saturday, January 25 ^th at 9:00am at the Hill Funeral Home, 822 Main St., East Greenwich.  Burial will be in RI Veterans Cemetery, Exeter.  Calling hours:  Friday, January 24 ^th 5-8pm.
