June J. Stearns

June J. Stearns June ("AJ", "June-bug"), 93, of The Bridge at Cherry Hill passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 28, 2022 at the Hope Hospice Center in Providence. She was born on October 7, 1928 in Greenwich, CT and grew up in Providence, RI with her 4 siblings. She was the daughter of the late Frank M. and Flora M. (Barstow) Stearns. She is survived by her siblings Carol Stearns McCarty of Louisville, KY, Martin Stearns (Eileen) of North Providence and Claire ("Honey") Travisono of Providence. "AJ" is also survived by her beloved nieces and nephews, Susan Babin, Cynthia Stearns McCarty, Robert Travisono, Janice Corona, Margaret Hare, Richard Travisono, Claire Simpson, cousin Cheryl Cant, many great nieces and nephews, and her many friends/staff at The Bridge at Cherry Hill. She was predeceased by her sister, Hope (Stearns) Babin and her lifelong partner, Eugene Weber. She loved spending time with her family (especially her great nieces and nephews), decorating for the different holidays, working on crossword puzzles, shopping for expensive pocketbooks, shoes and clothes, reading a good book, drinking a strong Manhattan, dining out at well-known restaurants, feeding the seagulls at Oakland Beach, listening to jazz music, and relaxing on the porch at her niece’s home at Echo Lake. She loved all animals especially dogs and cats. She loved travelling and spent many years skiing up in North Conway, NH, vacationing to Cape Cod and to Louisville to the Kentucky Derby, living summers on Gene’s boat in Warwick Neck, and as a “RI snow-bird” wintering in Boca Raton, Florida. She spent many summers living at a family home in Scarborough Beach, Narragansett, with her mother, Flora, which they totally loved. In her younger years she also spent summers living with her siblings and grandmother, Georgianna Barstow, at a family home on Quaddick Lake in Thompson, CT. June graduated from Mt Pleasant High School in Providence. She worked in a career she really enjoyed for over 45 years for the New England Telephone Company as a supervisor of the linemen and telephone work crews. She also volunteered for many years at the emergency room at Roger Williams Hospital and volunteered with adults with disabilities at the John E Fogarty Center. “AJ” was one of a kind… outspoken, funny, stubborn, generous, independent, cantankerous at times, adventurous, sarcastic, and very sociable with anyone she met. We will all miss her free spirit and truly unique personality. The Stearns family expresses our heartfelt appreciation to the staff at “The Bridge”, Mary Ann Grace, Director, Amy Brayton, RN, and many other staff, along with Hospice Nurse Jaime. Donations in June's memory can be made to The Bridge at Cherry Hill, 1 Cherry Hill Road, Johnston, RI 02919. Arrangements entrusted to the J.F. Skeffington Funeral Home & Cremations, 925 Chalkstone Avenue, Providence. Visiting hours in the funeral home on Friday, October 7th, from 9:30am-10:30am with a prayer service at 10:30am followed by interment in Pocasset Cemetery, 417 Dyer Avenue, Cranston.
