age 90, of Hopkins Avenue, Johnston, passed away peacefully Tuesday morning, November 19, 2013 at his home. For 68 wonderful years he was the husband of Dorothy "Red" (Cullen) Darigan.
Born in Cranston January 26, 1923, he was a son of the late Lester H. Darigan Sr. and Sarah V. ( White ) Darigan. He graduated Lockwood High School in 1940 and served in the US Army as a Corporal from 1944 to 1948.
He had worked for Federal Products, Eddy Street Providence as a Electroplater Foreman for 43 years before retiring in 1983. A member of St. Paul Catholic Church in Cranston RI for many years and then at St. Joseph Church, North Scituate. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, golfing, bowling, and with his stamp collection, was a renowned Philatelist. He was also a Boy Scout Leader.
He and his family enjoyed trips to New Hampshire every summer in their early years. He was an avid, skilled stone wall builder and gardener. He was a New York Yankees & New York Giants number One Fan. He played semi-pro softball in Rhode Island's first Negro Softball League.
Surviving are five sons Lester H. Darigan III and his wife Margaret of Maine, Robert J. and his wife Debbie of Hampton CT, Michael P., Stephen T. and his wife Terry of Gloucester RI, and Paul G. and his wife Janice of Cape Cod MA. Three daughters Mary Lou DiGiulio and husband Kenneth of Pennsylvania, Anne E. Darigan and her life partner Daniel Griffin, and June Andrea Botelho Darigan. Three brothers Lawrence J., Robert W., and Richard A. Darigan. He was the father of the late Philip and Christopher Darigan and brother of the late Donald Darigan. He had twenty-five Grandchildren and twenty-seven Great-Grandchildren.
A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated in St. Joseph Church, 144 Danielson Pike, North Scituate on Saturday at 9am to which relatives and friends are invited. Burial will be in the R.I. Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Exeter. Visiting hours in the J.F. SKEFFINGTON CHAPEL, 925 Chalkstone Avenue, Providence on Friday from 4-8pm.
