Jose Madeira Abrantes Jr.

With heavy hearts we share the passing of José Madeira Abrantes Jr. who died peacefully on July 8, 2025, surrounded by his family at Rhode Island Hospital. He was 82 years old. José was born on April 28, 1943, in Mosteiros, São Miguel Açores. In 1970, he made the courageous decision to leave his homeland and move to the United States in search of a better future. He built a beautiful life, deep love for his family, and quiet strength. He was the beloved husband of Ermezinda Abrantes, with whom he shared 55 years of marriage. A devoted father, he leaves behind Daciano Abrantes, Natecia Alfonso, her husband Michael, and Nelia Abrantes. Jose’s greatest joys were his grandchildren — Victoria Bairos, her husband Russell Bairos, Nickolas Abrantes, his fiancé Bianca Osko, Ethan and Meghan Osley, Brady Abrantes, Jeffrey, Michael and his great-grandchildren — Ezra, Michaelyn and Tristan. Jose loved going fishing with his cousins and friends. He loved caring for his garden, and cheering on his favorite soccer team, Benfica. But most of all, he loved being with his family. His stories, his laughter, and his steady presence will be missed beyond words. He was the son of the late Maria Julia Figueiredo, and leaves behind a legacy of love, quiet wisdom, and deep devotion. He will be missed more than words could ever say.

Viewing will be Monday, July 14th from 4pm-7pm in the Skeffington Funeral Home and Cremations.

925 Chalkstone Avenue, Providence. A memorial service will be held in the funeral home at 10am on Tuesday, July 15th.

Burial will be private.
