Marcia J. O’Rourke, 79, of North Kingstown, wife of the late Robert J. O’Rourke, passed away Saturday, September 8 th , peacefully at home surrounded by family, listening to a Red Sox game. Marcia, or Marty was the daughter of the late James D. McMahon and M. Helen (James) McMahon. Beloved mother of Patricia A. Parkinson (husband, Stephen) of Warwick, Maureen H. Walsh (husband, Sean) of Danielson, CT, Brenda M. Racine (husband, Ron) of Exeter, James P. O’Rourke (wife, Teresa) of North Kingstown, and Kevin J. O’Rourke (wife, Karen) of West Greenwich. Marty adored her eleven grandchildren, Michaela J. Lindia (husband, Mike), Nate Parkinson, Matt Parkinson, Ryan Tucker, Kendra Racine, Kelly O’Rourke, Caleb Racine, Bobby O’Rourke, Jimmy O’Rourke, Roman Walsh, and Johnny O’Rourke. She was also the proud Great-Grammy to Cameron Lindia and Jameson Tucker. Marty is survived by her two sisters, Patricia M. Lindsay (husband, Jack) and Barbara H. O’Rourke, one sister-in-law, Kathleen Cunha (husband, John) and her ‘favorite’ brother, Dave McMahon (wife, Cheryl). She was predeceased by Anna M. and James P. O’Rourke (mother and father-in-law), her sister, Linda E. Bruno, her sister-in-law, Judith Ethier and brother-in-law, Charlie O'Rourke.
Marty grew up in East Greenwich, graduated from East Greenwich High School and Johnson and Wales University. She worked in banking before her marriage when she moved to Woonsocket and proudly supported her husband as he moved through the ranks of the Woonsocket Police Department while Marty stayed home to care for their children. After Bob’s death in 1973, Marty moved to North Kingstown and returned to the work force, working for the telephone company (NYNEX through Verizon) for twenty nine years, retiring in 2001.
Marty’s passions were her family and the Boston Red Sox. She was happiest when surrounded by her children and grandchildren and never missed a milestone, birthday, graduation, sporting achievement or other special occasion. She enjoyed many summer days at the family beach house at Pojac Point and loved nothing more than a good card game or sharing stories with family and friends at various gatherings.
Marty was very proud of her brood and provided a loving and welcoming home that included extended family, nieces, nephews and countless friends of her children who thought of Aunt Marty or Mrs. O as a second mom. She was fiercely protective of those she cared about and truly loved by all that knew her.
