Marjorie C. Brush

Marjorie “Midge” Brush, of North Kingstown, died peacefully on Tuesday, February 6.  She was 100 years old.  She was survived by her three sons: Richard and his wife Sheila, John and his wife Gwen and Frederick and his wife Kristen.  A fourth son, Robert died in childhood.  Also surviving are 6 grandchildren: Catherine Canney and her husband Isaac and Douglas Brush and his wife Emily; Benjamin Brush and Kate Brush; and Lauren Brush and Caroline Brush.  Additionally there are four great grandchildren: Adam and Ella Canney; and Milo and Leon Brush.

She was born and raised in St Albans, Vermont.  In 1946, she married Robert M. Brush, also from St. Albans, after he returned home from World War II.  After several short moves they settled in Weston, Massachusetts where she and Robert were founding members of the Weston Congregational Church; in 1969 they moved to Rancho Santa Fe, California; and after Robert’s death, she moved to Osterville, Massachusetts.  In 2008, she moved to Rhode Island to be nearer to her family.

An avid bowler (she even scored over 200 in tenpins at the age of 75), golfer and birdwatcher, she also enjoyed a competitive game of Yahtzee, and loved to do crossword puzzles and the daily jumble.  Although she never claimed to be much of a cook, her fish stew was memorable and all her sons remember Sunday pot roast dinners.

Family was important to her and she was often surrounded by two and sometimes even three generations at Brush family gatherings on Cape Cod and Rhode Island.  She often marveled that in her youth she remembered milk being delivered by a horse drawn carriage, later seeing a man walk on the moon and finally a lady in the car GPS telling us how to get to wherever we wanted go.  Even in her last days, with her health failing, she wanted us to know how happy she was and how amazed she was that she had reached 100 years.  She will be sorely missed by all that knew her as an optimistic, kind and loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend.

A memorial service is planned for the summer. Continue to check this website updates.
