I wanted to take a moment to share some heartfelt reflections on the life of Matthew Sherman, a remarkable individual whose spirit touched so many of us.
Matthew was born in California but grew up in Rhode Island, where he graduated from Ponaganset High School. After finishing school, he made a bold move to Colorado, spending around 20 years in the Boulder, Nederland, and Denver areas. It was there that he found his true calling—becoming a master carpenter and founding his own general contracting business, Nine Cube. His passion for woodcraft and artistry was evident in every project he took on, reflecting both his skill and soul.
Beyond his craft, Matthew was an adventurer at heart. An accomplished mountain climber and snowboarder, he was fueled by his love of the outdoors, travel, music, and the thrill of new experiences. He was a devoted fan of the Grateful Dead and Phish, bands whose music carried deep personal meaning for him throughout his life. One of his favorite lines—“May the four winds blow you safely home” from Franklin’s Tower—captures the warmth and good wishes he carried for everyone he knew.
Matthew was a free spirit with a larger-than-life presence and a golden heart. He had an extraordinary ability to connect with people from all walks of life, energized by friendship and human connection. He found his greatest joy in getting to know others, building meaningful relationships, and generously giving back to his community. His life was full of light, love, and unwavering loyalty.
In recent years, Matthew reconnected with the love of his life, Stephanie Girard, and made the heartfelt decision to return to Rhode Island to be closer to family. He was a beloved father to his daughter, Alora, and he is survived by his mother, Linda Tracy; his sister, Montana Sherman; his fiancée, Stephanie; and an extensive tribe of chosen family who cherished him deeply.
Matthew leaves behind a legacy that touches the lives of all who knew him—one filled with warmth, generosity, and friendship. His spirit lives on in each person he welcomed into his world, a testament to a life lived fully and authentically.
Thank you for keeping Matthew’s memory close to your heart. May we all carry forward his passion for life, his kindness, and his love of connection.
With warmth and remembrance the Sherman Family.
