Maureen Fitzpatrick Burgess, 84, of Newport, RI, after a long battle with COPD, passed away on Thursday, July 9, 2020 surrounded by her family. Born on March 6, 1936 in Southbridge, MA, she was the daughter of Joseph and Veronica (Roycroft) Fitzpatrick.
Maureen was a graduate of Boston College, with a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing. Maureen worked as an RN in Boston and Martha’s Vineyard hospitals. She also practiced as an RN in New Hampshire nursing homes during her long career. She also earned her real estate license while living on Martha’s Vineyard.
Maureen loved animals, especially dogs. She continually owned a dog as a family pet and frequently cared for family member’s animals throughout her life. She was known by her Florida neighbors as “Jackie’s Mom”, her trusted Jack Russell Terrier, a breed she was especially fond of. She was also a sailor for many years alongside her husband, Tom. She always looked forward to reading a good book, visiting friends, traveling or relaxing at the beach. Above all, Maureen was a loving wife, mother, daughter, sister, grandmother and great-grandmother who cherished time spent with her family.
Maureen is survived by her son, Thomas J Burgess and his wife, Monique, of Newport, RI, her granddaughter and grandson, Cameron and Thomas Cole Burgess of Newport, RI and her granddaughter, Amy Potter and her husband Daniel of Worcester, VT and their son Quinn; as well as numerous extended family members, friends and colleagues.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday July 21 st at 10:00 am at Our Lady of Mercy Church, 65 Third Street, East Greenwich, RI. Burial will be private. Although unconventional, due to social distancing precautions, Celebration of Life will be held at a separate event (information to follow) this time next year to appropriately honor Maureen, her memory and her life. Furthermore, due to COVID-19 restrictions, this link is for out of state family and friends to view the mass via YouTube. No receiving line or congregating is allowed after mass.
