Michael Joseph O’Brien, MD, 62, of East Greenwich, RI, passed away peacefully on April 27, 2026. Originally from Brightwaters, NY, Dr. O’Brien was a 1982 graduate of Bay Shore High School. He earned his B.S. from the College of the Holy Cross in 1986, and from there went on to pursue a medical degree. He graduated from SUNY Downstate College of Medicine in 1990, and completed his ophthalmology residency at SUNY Downstate in Brooklyn, NY. He then pursued a fellowship in diseases and surgery of the retina at LSU Medical Center in New Orleans, LA. Mike enjoyed his work, and cared for countless patients in his 30 year career at Koch Eye Associates in Warwick, RI.
Mike was an active member at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church in East Greenwich. He enjoyed big game fishing, travel, and any and all sports. First and foremost, though, Mike loved his family and friends, and took any opportunity he could to spend time with them. He loved to laugh, and he was also known to surprise his nieces and nephews by just showing up at one of their sporting events.
When Mike’s beloved wife Lisa entered his life, together they continued his love of travel within the US and abroad, especially enjoying their vacation home in Palm Beach Gardens, FL. Mike was also able to fulfill his lifelong dream of traveling across the country, watching his all-time favorite New York Mets play in several MLB parks.
Dr. O’Brien is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Lisa (nee Anderson); his three step daughters: Ainsley, Cailin, and Bryn MacGillivray; his father, John D. O’Brien; his father-in-law John Anderson; his two brothers: David O’Brien (Julie) and James O’Brien (Catherine); four nieces: Erin, Katherine (Richard), Jessica, and Mary; and two nephews: Patrick (Katherine) and Andrew.
Mike touched many lives over the years, and he will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
