of Newport and North Providence, Rhode Island passed away peacefully on Tuesday, November 13, 2018. Oscar was born on July 18, 1927 to Dick and Margaret Sahagian. He married Hasmeg Garabedian on May 11, 1952. Together they raised two children, Dawn and Richard.
As a child he worked with his father in the family business. As he grew older he assumed control of the business and eventually expanded it to include real estate acquisitions and development both in Rhode Island and Florida. His success in business can be directly attributed to his work ethic and his natural business acumen.
In his teenage years toward the end of World War II, Oscar served in the United States Coast Guard. Oscar was also an army veteran of the Korean War, where he earned several medals, including the Korean Service Medal with two Bronze Services Stars, a United Nations Service Medal, and a National Defense Service Medal.
Oscar was a 32nd Degree Mason in the Valley of Providence Scottish Rite and a member of Roger Williams Lodge #32. He advanced to become a Shriner in 1961.
As a member of Kirkbrae County Club and later Metacomet, he enjoyed golf with his friends. It was never about the score but about the camaraderie of his friends. He enjoyed fishing from his own boats as well as with friends in the Caribbean. Oscar was known for his wry wit, his infectious smile, and his kind and compassionate spirit. When Oscar was your friend, he was a loyal friend for life.
Oscar is survived by his beloved wife Hasmeg, his son Richard and his wife Celeste, his daughter Dawn Sahagian and her companion Dr. Vincent Iacono, his sister Roxie Sgouros, and his beloved granddaughter Stacy Sahagian and her fiancé Connor McKinney. He is predeceased by his sister Sarah Redding. Oscar was the mainstay of his loving family and will be sorely missed.
Funeral service will be private at the J.F. Skeffington Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Shriners Hospital for Children, Office of Development, 2900 N. Rocky Point Drive, Tampa, FL 33607.
