Peter Willard Armitage December 26, 1951 – November 19, 2025

Peter Willard Armitage, 73, of Providence, Rhode Island, died on November 19, 2025, after a long illness.

Born on December 26, 1951, in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, Peter was the son of the late Margaret Willard Armitage of Pittsford, Vermont, and Perley E. Armitage of Rochester, New Hampshire. He spent much of his youth in Pittsford at the family home held by the Hutchinson and Willard families for generations—a place that remained a lifelong anchor to his Vermont roots.

Peter graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design, where he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Photography. He went on to build a distinguished career as a graphic designer, contributing his creative talents to the Providence Preservation Society, Roger Williams Park Zoo, and a number of Providence-based design firms. His work reflected both his artistic training and his keen eye for thoughtful, elegant design.

Peter was known for his quick wit, wide-ranging curiosity, and generosity with his time and talent. He was a devoted New Yorker reader, loved film, theater, and music, and was an avid listener with a curated jazz collection that spanned decades. He especially enjoyed hosting dinner parties where lively conversation brought his friends together. Peter was also a curious and adventurous traveler, exploring the cultures of Europe and South America, ranging from the streets of Prague to those of Buenos Aires.

In addition to his late parents, Peter was predeceased by his half-sister, Holly Armitage. He is survived by his stepmother, Rachelle Armitage of Rochester, New Hampshire; his brother, John B. Armitage of Clarendon, Vermont; his nephew, Loren Armitage of Raleigh, North Carolina; and his niece, Lianne Armitage of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.

Peter’s presence, wry humor, and generosity will be remembered by all who had the good fortune to know him.
