Peter J. Bongiorni

Peter Joseph Bongiorni, 83, of East Greenwich passed away peacefully on August 5, 2016. He was a devoted husband of 58 years, a proud father and a loving grandfather. He is survived by his beloved wife, Mary Madeline Dinagen Bongiorni and daughters, Barbara Ann Cerwonka and son-in-law Craig P. Cerwonka, Tara Ann Ajello and son-in-law Joseph P. Ajello, and granddaughters Meredith and Abigail Cerwonka.

Mr. Bongiorni was a graduate of St. Michaels College, Winooski, VT and Columbia University Graduate School of Business, NY. He was a past president of the St. Michael’s College Alumni Association, the Board of Trustees, and involved in alumni activities until his death.

Mr. Bongiorni spent 34 years on the faculty of Providence College as an Associate Professor of Accounting, retiring in 2008. He served on many boards and committees during his tenure. He treasured his years at the Dominican College.

Previously, he had also served as an officer in the U.S. Navy, and practiced as a Certified Public Accountant.
His civic activities include over 40 years of membership in the Lions Club, serving in various roles such as secretary, treasurer, president-elect, president, and past president. For many years he was the Treasurer of the RI Lions Sight Foundation. He was the recipient of the Melvin Jones Fellow Award for dedicated humanitarian services, the highest award given by the Lions Club International Foundation.

He was a member of Our Lady of Mercy Church, serving as Trustee, Eucharistic Minister, Lector, and member of the parish finance council and the OLM school board.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday August 10th at 11:00 am at Our Lady of Mercy Church, 65 Third St., East Greenwich. Burial will be private. Calling hours are respectfully omitted. Contributions in his memory may be made to: Providence College.
