Richard A. Bernard , age 84, of North Kingstown, Rhode Island & Plantation, Florida passed away Friday October 5th surrounded by family. Richard was the beloved husband of Virginia (Carnevale) Bernard for 61 years. He was born in Wauregan, Connecticut, attending Mount Saint Charles Academy and graduating from Coventry High School as a star football player.
He served in the U.S. Coast Guard and was stationed as an interpreter at Ellis Island until his honorable discharge in 1961. Richard’s lifelong career in real estate started shortly after his return from the service, when he joined the family business, H.J. Bernard Realty of Coventry, Rhode Island. As the past president of the Kent County Board of Realtors, he was recognized as Realtor of the Year in 1966 for his outstanding contributions to the realtor profession. In 2007, Richard received the status of Realtor Emeritus for 40 years of dedication to the National Association of Realtors. He served as a Corporator at Centerville Bank and a former Trustee for over 26 years. Past President of the Rhode Island Golf Association, a member of Quidnessett Country Club of North Kingstown, Rhode Island, and Lago Mar Country Club of Plantation, Florida.
Son of the late Henry and Marie (Beauchemin) Bernard, survived by his sister Penny Bernard Weber of Coventry, and his five children: Susanne and the late Tom Suprock of South Kingstown, Trisha and Donald Metcalf of Greer, SC, Jody and Richard Bernard Jr of Coventry, Karen Bernard of Warwick and Allison Bernard of North Kingstown. Pepé to 11 grandchildren: John Daley IV, Brandon Daley, Ingrid Crawford, Jeremy Martini, Nicole Metcalf, Lauren Metcalf, Amanda Metcalf, Timothy Bernard, Isabella Bernard, Richard Bernard III, and Julia Bernard.
Richard will be remembered as a loving husband, father, Pepé, colleague and friend.
Funeral Saturday October 13 th at 8:30 am from the Hill Funeral Home, 822 Main St., East Greenwich with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 am at Our Lady of Mercy Church, 65 Third St., East Greenwich. Burial with military honors will be in the RI Veterans Cemetery, Exeter. Calling hours: Friday October 12 th from 4-8 pm. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the John P. Burke Memorial Caddy Scholarship Fund, 1 Buttonhole Dr., Providence, RI 02909.
