Richard Whalen, 90, husband of 64 years to the late Mary J. Whalen (Morrisroe), passed away peacefully on August 6, 2025, in Providence, surrounded by his loving family. A lifelong resident of Providence, RI.
He began his education at Blessed Sacrament School and continued through La Salle Academy. Following graduation, Richard served honorably in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War. Upon returning home, he joined the Providence Fire Department, where he proudly served for 20 years. While working full-time as a firefighter, he utilized the GI Bill to pursue higher education and earned a degree from Providence College in 1977.
After retiring from the fire department, Richard continued his commitment to public service with a second career at the State of Rhode Island’s Division of Taxation, where he remained until his retirement.
Richard was a devoted husband, father and brother. He is survived by his children, Jack Whalen and his wife Robin of Narragansett, Timothy F. Whalen and his wife Dianna of Narragansett, and Marianne B. Whalen of Cranston. He also leaves behind his sister Lorraine Carnevale of East Providence and six grandchildren Jarred, Jonathan, Jeremy, Emily, Emilia and Audrey.
He was predeceased by his parents, Francis R. Whalen, and Madeline Whalen (Cooney), as well as his siblings Francis E. Whalen and Barbara Landi.
A sports enthusiast, Richard was a loyal supporter of local teams including Providence College and the University of Rhode Island, where he held season tickets for many years. He followed the Boston Red Sox, Bruins, and Celtics with unwavering enthusiasm. An avid golfer, he enjoyed a friendly round that often included a lighthearted wager of one dollar. Richard always had a good story to tell at family Sunday dinners.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Tuesday August 12, 2025, at 10:00 am at Blessed Sacarment Church 179 Academy Avenue Providence, RI. Burial will be in St. Ann Cemetery Cranston, RI. Calling hours: Monday, August 11th, from 4 pm - 7 pm.at the SKEFFINGTON FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION, 925 Chalkstone Avenue, RI 02908.
