Robert "Bob" Oakley died peacefully at Trinity Nursing Home in Woonsocket, on November 5, 2021, at the age of 69. Family members were by his side in the days before and during his passing. He was loved and cherished. Bob's battle with dementia showed his courage in facing life's challenges. It was not easy, but he stayed strong until the end, often repeating his mantra, "It is what it is." He will be missed.  Â
Bob grew up in Central Falls and Cumberland. He was an avid sportsman. As a young man, he loved shooting hoops and could often be found at the playground or at the school gymnasium. After joining the Army during Vietnam and serving as a medic, Bob continued to play ball for the Army and he went on to coach basketball for Army officers and for their children while he was stationed in Germany. Â
Bob also loved ten-pin bowling and had collected pins for shooting 300 games during league play in Lincoln and in East Providence. He was an avid fisherman, as well.  Â
Bob was a good man with a large and complicated family. He is survived by his ninety-one year old mother, Loretta Papineau Oakley Laliberte, of Cumberland, as well as by his children, Tessa Stoeger and her husband Jason of Wisconsin, Robert W. Oakley Sr. and his wife Kirsten of Montana, and Amy (Oakley) Russell and her husband Joseph of North Providence, as well as by many grandchildren, siblings, cousins, nieces and nephews.
His father, Charles Oakley, predeceased him. Â
Bob will be honored at a memorial service at the Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Exeter in Friday November 12 at 1030am.
