Robert Francis Poitras, 88, passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of love, service, kindness, and unwavering devotion to his family. Born in Providence, Rhode Island, he was the beloved son of the late Henry W. Poitras and Loretta (Brady) Poitras.
Robert shared 66 wonderful years of marriage with the love of his life, Johanna Maria Poitras (Versteegden), whom he met while serving in the United States Air Force. He enlisted in the Air Force in 1955 and proudly served his country for six and a half years. During his military service, he was stationed in Guam, France, and the Netherlands. It was while stationed in the Netherlands that he met Johanna, beginning a remarkable love story that spanned more than six decades.
A dedicated professional, Robert enjoyed a successful career as an insurance agent and manager for several insurance companies over many years. Following his retirement, he embarked on a second career with Bad Dog Tools of Bristol, Rhode Island. He truly loved his work there, especially the opportunity to travel throughout the United States, meet new people, and build lasting friendships along the way.
Robert is survived by his devoted wife, Johanna Maria Poitras; his loving children, Kevin Poitras and his wife, Dolores, of Lincoln, Rhode Island; Kenneth Poitras and his wife, Libby, of Chandler, Arizona; Linda Leason of Taunton, Massachusetts; and Kimberly Poitras of Cranston, Rhode Island. He was a proud grandfather to Andrew Poitras of Mexico City, Elizabeth Poitras of San Diego, California, Ryan Leason of Clinton, Massachusetts, and Sam Leason of Taunton, Massachusetts. He was also blessed with two cherished great-grandchildren, Olivia Cochran and Sawyer Escalante of San Diego, California.
In addition to his parents, Robert was predeceased by his brother, Henry J. Poitras, and his beloved son-in-law, John Leason.
Robert’s greatest passions extended far beyond his work. At just 16 years old, he purchased his first motorcycle, beginning a lifelong love of riding. He was a proud and devoted member of the Rhode Island Retreads motorcycle club for many years, where he formed countless friendships and enjoyed many memorable rides.
Known for his remarkable mechanical ability, Robert could fix just about anything. Whether he was working on cars, repairing household items, or lending a helping hand to a neighbor or friend, he was happiest when putting his skills to use for others. His generosity, humility, and willingness to help anyone in need became defining qualities that all who knew him admired.
Above all else, Robert treasured his family. He was a loving husband, devoted father, proud grandfather and great-grandfather, loyal friend, and a man of integrity whose quiet strength and compassionate heart touched countless lives.
His family finds comfort in the many wonderful memories he leaves behind and in knowing that his legacy of love, service, generosity, and dedication will continue to live on through those who knew and loved him.
Robert will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
