Shirley Berlanga, 81, of East Greenwich, and formerly of North Kingstown, passed away on Sunday, September 24th after a long illness. She was the beloved wife of Jesus Berlanga (Deceased), Chief Petty Officer, United States Navy. Born in 1936 in Waynesboro, Virginia, she was one of nine children born to Katherine (Call) and Roy Zimmerman. After graduating from high school, she moved to Washington, DC where she met and married Jesus Berlanga.
Shirley leaves behind her family: Dolores and her husband Doug Fierro, Joe and his wife Shirley Berlanga, and Gloria Berlanga. She was ‘Nana’ to all of her grandchildren: Brianna and Alaina Fierro, Jesus Berlanga and Cole Haggarty. All of Shirley’s friends knew how much her grandchildren meant to her.
Shirley was a devoted Christian and an active member of Our Lady of Mercy Church in East Greenwich, RI. She enjoyed organizing many church fundraising activities, working at the OLM Food Pantry and spending time with her “church ladies”.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Our Lady of Mercy Church, 65 Third St, East Greenwich on Friday, September 29th at 10:00AM. A private family burial will take place at Arlington National Cemetery. Calling hours are at Hill Funeral Home, 822 Main St, East Greenwich on Thursday, September 28th from 5:00PM – 7:00PM. Flowers are accepted or donations may be made to the Our Lady of Mercy Food Pantry.
