Virginia M. "Ginny" Jamieson

Virginia M. (McGregor) Jamieson, “Ginny” passed away peacefully September 5, 2016. Ginny, as she was affectionately known, was born in Providence to the late William McGregor, of Providence, RI, and the late Ellen (Foss) McGregor, of Attleboro, Ma. She was raised on William Henry Road in North Scituate, with her many siblings and large extended family.
In 1961 she married and moved to East Greenwich. While raising her family of 4 children, she attended Katherine Gibbs School where she was the first woman admitted to the school’s first evening program. When her youngest son entered grade school, Ginny began working in the East Greenwich School system while also taking classes at URI Extension. In 1977, through the CETA program, Ginny began her career as a dispatcher with the East Greenwich Police Department, where she was the first woman on the police force to work the midnight to 8 a.m. shift. Through hard work, fierce determination and commitment, and with the support of then Police Chief John Botelho, Ginny graduated at the top of her class at age 57, becoming one of the town’s first female special police officers of which she was extremely proud and where she faithfully served the community until her retirement in 1996.
After retirement, she enjoyed spending time with her beloved grandchildren, often hiking with them in the White Mountains. Ginny loved the outdoors and became a lifetime member of the Appalachian Mountain Club, continuing to hike the mountains until she was well into her 70’s. She was a member of the Belles of Beechwood Red Hat Society, North Kingstown Senior Association and the Frenchtown Barn Club. Our mother loved country/western music and was always the first person on the dance floor. Ginny was extremely proud of her Scottish heritage and enjoyed attending Highland Games. In her retirement, Ginny found fulfillment by becoming a greeter at Walmart in North Kingstown. It was not uncommon for her to be approached by strangers who recognized her as “that friendly Walmart lady”.
Ginny was a long time member of First Baptist Church of East Greenwich where she was known for her delicious fudge. She loved gardening, attending her sons little league games, URI and Boston College football games as well as cheering on her beloved Red Sox and New England Patriots.
Ginny will be missed by many whose lives she touched. She is survived by daughter Debra (Rev. Dr. Donald) sons Craig and Scott (Catherine). In addition, she is survived by 10 grandchildren; Michele, Melissa, Adam, Bryan, Patrick, Christopher, Michael, Danny, Rebekah and Sarah; and 5 great grandchildren; Jack, Alex, Connor, Mason and Gracie. She is predeceased by her daughter Ellen McGregor, her parents, her siblings William, Louis, Florence, Loretta, and Evelyn, as well as her good friend George Brissman.
Her family would like to thank the staff at Roberts Health Centre for their exceptional kindness and loving care to our mother during her last year as well as Julia Rogers for her faithful visits to our mom.
