William (“Bill") Lawrence McGill, 82, of North Kingstown, RI, left to join the love of his life, Rosemary (McKenna) McGill, on January 29, 2025. Bill and Rose were married for 33 years. He loved Rosemary with all his heart and missed her deeply every day since her passing. Although he would describe himself as a curmudgeon, he was always really a softie at heart.
Born in Pawtucket, RI, on February 16, 1942, to William and Mary (Hanley) McGill, he leaves behind his children- Kathleen (McGill) Mattson and her husband Les; Tracey (Pianka) Bates and her husband George, who faithfully and lovingly cared for him at home to the very end; Susan (McGill) Nascimento and her husband Roger; William John McGill; Debbie Pianka; and the late Eddie Pianka. He was “Poppy” to grandchildren Robyn, Aydan, Victoria, and great-granddaughter Rayne, and Grandfather to Calisa. He was also known as “Uncle Bill” to the Dunwoody family of East Greenwich, often speaking fondly of the times he spent with them. Bill is survived by a brother, Charles McGill and his wife Kathy; a sister, Charlene (McGill) Lamoureux; and a sister-in-law, Debbie Werchadlo and her husband Chuck, as well as many nieces and nephews. We will miss him dearly.
Bill graduated from Tolman High School in 1960, served in the Army (Co. C 1st Battalion 2nd Infantry Fort Devens), and then became a member of the Pawtucket Fire Department until his retirement in 1987. After retiring from the fire department, he continued working for many years at the Providence Post Office. He was a 30-year member of the Wincheck Gun Club and was proud to be one of the original “Dirty 30”, a title that had to be earned (as he would tell those who wanted the T-shirt, you know who you are). Bill made many friends through the club and was humbled and grateful for their friendship and support, especially during difficult times when he was ill. Meeting friends for breakfast on Fridays was an important highlight of his week, and he continued to make the trek until very recently.
His family is truly grateful to you all.
At Bill’s request, his funeral and burial with military honors will be private.
