William “Bill” P. Wentworth, Jr passed away peacefully in North Kingstown, RI on September 18, 2022.
Born in Brooklyn Park, Maryland, on October 4, 1944, Bill was the son of the late William P. Wentworth, Sr and Molly (Goldscher) Wentworth. Bill is survived by his wife Mary Margaret (Volz), to whom he was the loving and devoted husband for 54 years, and his brother Henry Wentworth. He was predeceased by his sister, Patricia (Drehoff).
After growing up in Brooklyn Park and attending Brooklyn Park High School, Bill attended Frostburg State
College before earning his Master’s degree in Education from Johns Hopkins University. He was a career educator; he spent 30 years working in the Anne Arundel County Public School system, first as a math teacher and then as an administrator. It was with great school spirit and pride that Bill returned to his alma mater, Brooklyn Park High School, as principal. He was named the inaugural principal of North County High School, established in 1990, which merged Brooklyn Park and Andover High Schools, and he remained at the helm, leading the Knights until he retired from A.A.Co. Public Schools in 1996. The football field at North County was named for him in a dedication ceremony in 2008. After his retirement from public education, Bill taught at Loyola University of Maryland in the Education Department.
Bill was also an active community member. He was appointed to the Baltimore Washington International Airport Commission during a period of active expansion at BWI. After relocating to Ocean Pines, Maryland in 2005, Bill was a member of the Board of Directors, and the Optimist Club, to name a few.
Bill loved sports. He proudly coached his son’s baseball teams and logged many hours watching his daughter play basketball. He is the ultimate fan - standing by his teams win or lose, never a fair-weather fan. He is a lifelong Orioles fan. He was a devoted Baltimore Colts fan until that fateful night in ’84 that shall not be discussed. He waited patiently, and often impatiently, until Baltimore became a football town once more in ’96 with the Baltimore Ravens. He was a member of the Ravens Roost in Ocean City. He held season tickets to the University of Maryland Terrapins football games well after he moved to the Eastern Shore. Unable to get to Camden Yards as often as he’d like for O’s games after moving across the bridge, he held season tickets to the minor league Delmarva Shorebirds games.
Bill loved music and dancing, especially Motown. He loved the beach. He loved to exercise and play platform tennis. He loved to travel. He enjoyed movies, TV crime shows, and reading. He was a loyal friend.
Most importantly, Bill loved his family. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather and will be greatly missed. Bill is survived by his wife Mary, son Christopher (Evelina), and daughter Allison Brindle (James). “Pop” is also survived by his five grandchildren: Juliana, Aidan, Jackie, Gretchen, and Molly.
Funeral services and burial will be held on Thursday, September 29, 2022. A Viewing will be held from 10:30 – 11:30 am at Holy Savior Catholic Church, 1705 Philadelphia Ave., Ocean City, Maryland.
